 Problem

Adopting and strictly following new CDC guidelines about hygiene during a pandemic proved to be difficult to many. A survey of over 50 participants showed that about 75% of participants did not immediately wash their hands upon returning home, which is a CDC guideline for staying safe during the pandemic. The goal was to create an app to ease transition into a new normal.

 Solution

Squeaky Clean is an app created to make pandemic life easier and help instill better habits in accordance with CDC guidelines in its users. The app notifies the user to wash their hands as soon as they enter their home, tracks how well the user is doing with washing their hands in a timely fashion, show to user how to and how long to wash their hands, as instructed by the CDC.

 The Process

 Research

I interviewed 15 participants to ask why they were unable to keep up with this CDC guideline and as them how an app could help them better protect themselves.

At large, participants would “forget” to wash their hands or it was “not on the top of their minds” of activities when they first returned home.

Participants found other hand hygiene apps “difficult to use” with too many features, which they deemed “unnecessary” and “overwhelming”.

There was also concern about not washing their hands the “correct way” or “long enough”.

Ideation

Three key factors played at the forefront of creating and developing this app:

 Testing

Conducting usability tests with several participants provided insight into what users found useful and what needed to be changed in order to improve the user’s experience.

Some participants had a hard time finding their home address using Google API. To fix that a “set current location as home address” feature was added.

Overall, participants has a positive experience with the flow and design of the app and feedback confirmed that the app was “user-friendly”, “useful” and “easy to use”.

 How it works

1.

Sign up by entering your name and home address. If a home address cannot be found the user can use their current location as the home address.

2.

Once the user is logged in and has enabled notification and location services, the app will send the user a notification to wash their hands once they leave and return to their home. If user chooses not share their location with the app they are able to still use the hand wash features by clicking the wash button.

3.

If the user clicks the notification or clicks on the wash button, the app will pull down the timer bubble and begin the timer. The user will able to follow along with the timer and animations to wash their hands according to CDC guidelines. After the timer is up, the user can press done and the timer bubble will pull back up to reveal the home screen.

4.

The user can track their overall progress on the app to see if they are meeting their goals and expectations.
